The airbag comprises inflater side material and an occupant side material of the same size. The two pieces of material are sewn together at the edges. The inflater side material has a central through opening for attachment of the inflater. The two pieces of material can be attached by tearable stitches which are torn by unfolding pressure. The tearable stitches are arranged in sections in the circumferential direction at spaces about the opening. Some of these stitches are weaker than others so that, by unfolding, the weaker ones tear before the stronger ones. Thus the airbag unfolds from the outside in.
