The roll changer for rotary printing machines has two arms (03) which swivel about a central frame (02) and carry mandrels (06), over which the roll cores fit. A position sensing system for fitting new rolls (08) consists of a photodetector (13) which detects the center of the core and transmits a laser beam and detects the reflection from a mirror (12) on the opposite side of the roll. The vertical position of the photodetector is controlled by a height sensor (16). An independent claim is included for a method for operating the roll changer.
