The evaluator (6) comprises a pulse generator circuit (7) designed to deliver a pulse of adjustable width. This includes a comparator (9, 9A) with first and second inputs. The pulse widths at these inputs are compared, producing an output signal dependent on the result. The first input is coupled to the output of the phase detector (4) and the second input is coupled to the pulse generator circuit (7). An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of evaluating jitter in a phase control circuit.
