PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable communication unit in which operational performance and portability are enhanced remarkably by adapting to and following up advancement, complication and high volume of communication information, and to provide a portable communication unit added with a camera mechanism. SOLUTION: The portable communication unit has a structure for displaying information, as required, at a large area display section by applying an electric field. The display section is taken up and contained in the body of the unit in the form of a tubular body when the communication unit is carried. The body of the unit is made to have a solid profile (e.g. tubular shape) which can be grasped in the longitudinal direction and an operating section is provided on the surface thereof. Consequently, the body of the unit can be grasped and operated easily, and excellent portability is provided in novel shape by the graspable solid profile of the body of the unit. The display section for displaying information on a large area can adapt to and follow up advancement, complication and high volume of communication information, and impart a photography and photographed record holding mechanism when the camera is equipped.
