PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a heater from meltdown in a case where an over current flows by an easily recoverable cause such as the short circuit of a capacitor in a protective device for the electric compressor having the heater allowed to melt in over current. SOLUTION: When a current with which the thermally-actuated mechanism 10 of the protective device 1 for the electric compressor operates in 0.5 sec. is passed through the heater 9, the heater is molted within 0.6 to 5.0 sec. The protective device meeting that requirement does not melt down the heater while the thermally-actuated mechanism operates even when the over current flows in the motor, and can securely continue a motor protective operation. Accordingly, the motor and the compressor can be recovered by coping with troubles. Even if the life of the protective device is terminated without noticing the occurrence of a trouble and the cutout of current is disabled, the heater is melted down by a continuously flowing over current to prevent the motor from being burned out.
