The workpiece (1) is forced through a ceramic die (2) with shoulders which forces a reduction in the cross-section of the workpiece. The die is subjected to an outward bursting force which may be resisted by a metal preloading ring (11) surrounding the die. The die presses down on a base ring (10) resting on a loading ring (3). The loading ring fits in a housing (8). A reinforcement ring (7) fills the annular space between the metal preloading ring and the inside diameter of the housing. The housing has a shoulder (8.1) at the top engaging a spring washer (T) pressing on a flange (6.1) on a reinforcement ring (6) with a tapered bore, holding a tapered reinforcement ring (5) holding a guide ring (4).
