PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To comprehend a degradation state of an encoder, which is used in a serial type recording device or the like. SOLUTION: The recording device, which has the encoder outputting two detection signals different from each other in phase at every timing when a carriage moves for a prescribed distance in its scan direction, includes an encoder missing phase detector 1601 which detects phase missing events in either of the two detection signals on the basis of states of the two detection signals being output from an encoder sensor 9 and which counts the number of times of the detected phase missing events; and a count value comparator 1602 which outputs an error detection signal when the above counted number value attains to a preset threshold for judgement.
