<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact planar light source capable of attaining sufficient brightness by the use of an LED that is a point source, and to provide a liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: A linear auxililiary light guiding member having a plurality of point sources is used. Light from a light source is reflected between the outgoing surface of the auxiliary light guiding member and its opposite reflecting surface, propagated to the whole auxiliary light source member, uniformized and emitted.
