PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve water retainability of a coating liquid effective for use in a size press (rod metering size press) of a paper machine. SOLUTION: The coating liquid comprising pigment and an adhesive as main components contains 0.01-0.1 part wt. of (calculated as solid content) based on 100 parts wt. of pigment of a (meth)acrylic acid-(meth)acrylamide copolymer as a water retaining agent. The (meth)acrylic acid-(meth)acrylamide copolymer is preferably a water-soluble copolymer obtained by copolymerizing 25-75 mol% of a (meth) acrylic acid monomer with 75-25 mol% of a (meth)acrylamide monomer.
