<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina-zirconia ceramic which has all the improved characteristics of strength, wear resistance (hardness) and toughness, and is suitably used for, in particular, various structural members, cutting tools, medical appliances and living matter materials. <P>SOLUTION: The alumina-zirconia ceramic containing Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>particles and ZrO<SB>2</SB>particles is characterized by containing 65% by mass or more of Al in terms of Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 4-34% by mass of Zr in terms of ZrO<SB>2</SB>, 0.1-4% by mass of Ce in terms of CeO<SB>2</SB>, 0.01-1.5% by mass of at least either Mn or Mg in terms of the oxide, and 0.6-4.5% by mass of SiO<SB>2</SB>, and also by containing a needle crystal of the complex oxide having as the constitutional elements at least either Mn or Mg, Ce and Al. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
