PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a compound of formula (I) which is an important intermediate for synthesizing agomelatine of a pharmaceutical, and to provide a method for industrially synthesizing the agomelatine, using the compound of formula (I). SOLUTION: This compound of formula (I), i.e., (7-methoxy-1-naphthyl)acetonitrile, is produced by dehydrogenating a corresponding 3,4-dihydronaphthalene compound in the presence of a specified allyl compound, such as allyl methacrylate, by using a hydrogenation catalyst, such as a palladium catalyst. Further, the agomelatine, i.e., N-[2-(7-methoxy-1-naphthyl)ethyl]acetamide, is industrially produced by reducing the compound of formula (I), and then acetylating the reduced compound with acetic anhydride.
