<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a smart key system capable of switching ineffectiveness/effectiveness (ON/OFF) of a smart function without providing an exclusive cancel switch. <P>SOLUTION: The smart key system 1 is so constituted that radio communications are made between a portable machine 17 recording an inherent ID code to a vehicle and the mobile equipment by periodically outputting a signal inquired from a smart ECU 3 through a vehicle outdoor transmitter 13, it is decided whether or not there is the portable machine 17 for the vehicle within a predetermined range from the vehicle by comparing the ID code and that the door of the vehicle is changed to an unlocking state from a locking state based on a result of the decision or a door lock release control changed into a lock release standby state capable of releasing the locking by a door operation from the outside of the vehicle.
