PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of restraining a situation that a difference is found in the fixing property of an image because surface characteristics are different between the back surface and the front surface of transfer paper or the hot offset of the image is caused on either the front surface or the back surface. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with an optical sensor unit 60 being a surface characteristics detection means for detecting the surface roughness Ra of the transfer paper P, and also a control part E1 being a thermal fixing temperature control means for controlling heating temperature to the 1st side of the transfer paper by a double-sided thermal fixing device 35 based on the surface roughness Ra on the 1st side thereof and controlling heating temperature to the 2nd side of the transfer paper by the device 35 based on the surface roughness Ra on the 2nd side thereof. Thus, the difference of the fixing property and the hot offset are restrained by controlling the heating temperature to the 1st and 2nd sides by the device 35 to a value corresponding to the surface roughness Ra.
