PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface sizing agent for paper, slight in foaming when applied on a paper base and exerting high waterproofness-improving effect and surface strength-improving effect when used in the surface sizing treatment of neutral paper as well as acid paper. SOLUTION: The surface sizing agent for paper comprises an emulsion that is obtained by emulsion polymerization of 100 pts. mass of (B) a hydrophobic unsaturated monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of (A) 33-300 pts. mass of a copolymer obtained by radical copolymerization between (1) a carboxy-containing unsaturated monomer, (2) a (meth)acrylic acid long-chain alkyl ester and (3) another unsaturated monomer.
