PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film scanner detecting stability of a fluorescent lamp to perform excellent image reading without providing a photodetector and a detection circuit. SOLUTION: In a film scanner using a fluorescent lamp 10 for a light source, after ON of the fluorescent lamp 10 is started, light of the fluorescent lamp 10 is photodetected by a CCD line sensor 20 during absence of a negative film 12 that becomes a read object, and a G output in which an amount of change is great and there is no sensitivity in an infrared area, is monitored among outputs of R, G, B channels of the CCD line sensor 20. If the change amount of the G signal reaches a predetermined value indicating stability of the fluorescent lamp 10, a signal for turning on a motor driving circuit 32 is outputted from a control circuit 34 to drive a film feeding motor 30, and reading of images recorded on the negative film 12 is started.
