PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-type image display device having good contrast and excellent withstand voltage characteristics. SOLUTION: This image display device is provided with a face plate; a rear plate arranged facing the face plate; a large number of electron emission elements formed on the rear plate; and a light absorbing layer and a phosphor layer formed on the inner surface, facing the rear plate, of the face plate. The light absorbing layer has a matrix lattice shaped pattern, and the phosphor layer has a striped pattern. The thickness of the light absorbing layer is made as thin as 2μm or less, and it is preferable to form the pattern of the phosphor layer on the pattern of the light absorbing layer so as to have no clearance between the adjacent stripes.
