Controlling the wear rate of refractory 102 within a furnace 100 by measuring the temperature 104 of the refractory layer 102, measuring the viscosity of a melt 106 and adjusting the melt temperature to an optimum set point temperature determined by a pre-defined relationship between the temperature of the refractory and the viscosity of the melt wherein, the optimum set point temperature is a minimum temperature that will sustain a desired rate at which the melt 106 is tapped from the furnace 100.
