PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing a high-purity indolecarboxylic acid ester useful as a raw material for a medicine, an agrochemical and an electronic material. SOLUTION: The method for industrially advantageously producing a high-purity indolecarboxylic acid ester comprises hydrolyzing an N-acylindolecarboxylic acid ester represented by formula (2) (R<SB>1</SB>OCO group is positioned at any of the 4-7 positions; R<SB>1</SB>is a 1-4C alkyl group; R<SB>2</SB>is hydrogen, a 1-4C alkyl group, a 1-4C alkoxy group, a 1-4C haloalky group, a 2-4C alkenyl group, a benzyl group or a phenyl group) in water and a solvent not to be arbitrarily dissolved in water in the presence or absence of a phase transfer catalyst and in the presence of a basic substance so as to selectively subject only the N-acyl group to partial hydrolysis.
