A gasification reactor (5) which supplies fuel gas to the calcining (2) and/ or sintering zone (3) of a cement clinker kiln, has a travelling grate or 'walking floor' (8) on which solid fuel is carried through the reactor, at a controlled rate and temperature. A proportion of raw kiln feed may be input through the reactor, together with hot air recycled from the clinker cooler (4).
