A smelting furnace has a pump with a motor-powered rotating pump gyro-wheel that is submerged in the molten metal. The furnace further has a feed pipe for molten metal. The motor drive shaft is located within a tube surrounded by molten metal. The motor is separated from the tube by a gas seal. The motor drive shaft tube is gas-charged to prevent ingress of molten metal to the tube.
