摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reversible variable length code (RVLC) generating method for a digital multimedia communication for transmission error immunity with which an optimal Huffman code and an average length function are used to improve compression efficiency of an RVLC. <P>SOLUTION: A reversible variable length code generating method comprises steps of: determining a starting bit level; selecting one code word for a most significant level and using ZL adaptation for adjusting the number of code words for an entire level to determine a code word of the starting bit level; applying level skipping adaptation with which any code word is not assigned to a bit level skipped in a given Huffman code word, to select a reversible variable length code word at a high-order level where the average length function is newly defined and used for selecting a reversible variable length code word or the like at each bit level; selecting a reversible variable length code word at each low-order level independently of a level skipping a reversible variable length code word which satisfies word-starting conditions and word-ending conditions, at a low-order level; and generating a final symmetric reversible variable length code or an asymmetric reversible variable length code when reversible variable length code words approximately as many as a total symbol number are assigned. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p>
