摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motion picture decoding apparatus which can reduce the amount of side information such as a motion vector. <P>SOLUTION: The motion picture decoding apparatus is provided with a side information decoding portion 35 and a region prediction selecting portion 37. In the side information decoding portion 35, an input coded side information is decoded, and motion vector, region information and prediction mode information are obtained. In the region prediction selecting portion 37, prediction images 1-n are formed by using distinct motion compensation inter-frame prediction systems, respectively, from the motion vector and a reference image frame which are input from the side information decoding portion 35, the prediction images 1-n are selected on the basis of the region information and the prediction mode information from the side information decoding portion 35, and a prediction image is formed. Even if it is a case where amount of side information which is necessary for motion vector in a region to be decoded is reduced by a motion picture coding apparatus, an image can be restored on the basis of the prediction mode information included in the reduced side information. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p>
