PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems in a conventional rotary compressor for HFC refrigerant wherein when a carbon dioxide is used for a refrigerating cycle using the carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, leakage loss occurs between the outer periphery of a piston and the inner wall of a cylinder since the carbon dioxide is larger in polytropic index than the HFC refrigerant and a time for generating leakage between the outer periphery of the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder is long since a timing for a pressure in a compression chamber to reach a delivery pressure is fast. SOLUTION: A relief valve 5a is installed in the suction side inner wall of the cylinder 5 so that a timing for the start of compression is retarded to retard the timing for the pressure in the compression chamber to reach a delivery pressure. Also, a leakage loss between the outer periphery of the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder can be reduced by reducing a time during which leakage occurs between the outer periphery of the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder and by bringing the pressure to the delivery pressure at a timing when the clearance between the outer periphery of the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder is small.
