The belt conveyor (1) for the conveying of piece goods on an endless driven belt guided over deflection rollers (4) at the ends is constructed so that the piece goods (2) can be conveyed on the belt with an overhang at least on one longitudinal side of the belt. The conveyor may be a center belt conveyor with a center revolving belt (3), whereby the piece goods are longitudinally orientated and in the middle of the belt, with an overhang by the same amount on both longitudinal sides of the belt. A lifting device (5) is provided to grip under the overhanging side of the goods and lift it from the conveyor belt.
