PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus with an automatic draft feeder (ADF) which decides a draft attribute and always reads a desired image at high speed. SOLUTION: An image sensor 27 for detecting the draft attribute exists in the inside portion of a ADF unit 51, a draft read portion of a carriage 3 is moved to a draft read position 30a, and a draft deliver path from the image sensor 27 to the draft read position 30a is elongated. Image reading is achieved always at a high speed according to the draft attribute by deciding the draft attribute, while the draft is being transported inside of the ADF unit 51.
