PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device suitable for enhancing the luminance of a display picture by realizing the expansion of a luminance dynamic range and the number of gradation. SOLUTION: The display device 100 is equipped with a light source 10 emitting illuminating light having uniform luminance distribution, a luminance modulation element having a plurality of light emitting areas, which can control the luminance level T1 of the emitted illuminating light independently, a polarizing beam splitter 16 composing the light from the light source 10 and the modulated illuminating light from the luminance modulation element, and a color modulation display panel having a plurality of pixels, which the composed illuminating light from the beam splitter 16 is made incident on and which can control transmittance T2 independently.
