Method for monitoring the flow of an application program (323) on a computer unit (303), especially a control program used in an automation plant. Accordingly, a monitoring unit (313) sends a test message to the program being monitored, which upon receipt and processing of the message, returns an acknowledgement message. The monitoring unit then calculates the response time and outputs the measurement result for further evaluation and or to a display. An independent claim is made for an arrangement for monitoring the execution of an application program in an automation system.
