A system including a client (100) and a server (200) in a client-server architecture. The client (100) transmits requests to the server (200) for content subject to a sorting criterion (110) that is ultimately used to sort results of the search in the client (100). The server (200) identifies an item matching the sorting criterion (110) from its items collection. The server further generates an identifier (110) for the directory item. The same request can be sent from the client to a multitude of servers (200, 210...). The identifier is generated from the sroting criterion (10) and is transmitted to the client (100). The client (100) uses the identifier to sort the matching items.
