The disclosure is generally concerned with an anti-virus security system providing generic protection for computers against malicious programs. The security system is installed at each computer in an organisation 3001-3005 as well as a central authority and/or system administrator and/or gateway node 3010. The security system at the authority/administrator/gateway automatically performs periodic checks on the security system installed at each of the computers to determine whether it is operating correctly. This remote monitoring is achieved by sending a short communication containing special codes with different keys for each computer. A correctly functioning security system is able to provide the appropriate response to the communication. Numerous features of the security system are also disclosed, including automatic segregation of programs, noticing and intercepting whenever the amount of data sent from a computer does not fit the amount reported, and preventing programs from accessing communication channels without user permission.
