Stabilizer compositions

Stabilizer compositions comprise (1) a polyester of molecular weight 500 to 4000 and having the general formula where n is at least 1; y is 2 or 3; R and R1 are hydrogen atoms or C1- 24 alkyl, C4- 24 cycloalkyl, C6- 24 aryl or C7- 24 aralkyl radicals; an R is a C2- 18 alkylene, C8- 12 arylenedimethylene or a C6- 18 cycloalkylenedimethylene radical or a radical of formula where x is 1 to 20 and z is 2-6 and (2) an organic phosphite; the weight ratio of polyester to phosphite being from 1:20 to 20:1. The preferred phosphites are where R17 is C1- 24 alkyl; where R18 is C4- 24 alkyl; where, in Formulae (c) and (d), R9 and R19 hydrogen or C1- 10 alkyl; R119 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl and X1 is C1- 10 alkylene, cycloalkylene (e.g. cyclohexylenedimethylene) or alkarylene, e.g. where m is 1 to 10; where in Formulae (e), (f) and (g) p is at least 2; or (h) Polymers obtained by reacting 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol with triphenyl phosphite. The stabilizer compositions may also contain (3) phenolic antioxidants which, in addition to their phenolic hydroxy groups, may contain salicylate or other ester groups, carboxy groups, alkyl carbonyl groups, alkoxy groups, secondary or tertiary amino groups, amido groups or sulphide or ether linkages, or (4) phenolic ultra-violet light stabilizers, e.g. of the type disclosed in Specification 1,090,265. The polyesters are made by reacting (i) 3,31-thiodipropionic acid or 4,41-thiodibutyric acid or esters thereof, (ii) an appropriate glycol and, possibly, (iii) an appropriate monocarboxylic acid or an ester or anhydride thereof or an appropriate monohydric alcohol. Specified glycols are ethylene glycol, 1:3-propylene glycol, 1:4-butanediol, 1:5-pentanediol, 1:6-hexanediol, 1:10-decanediol, neopentyl glycol, 2:2 - diethylpropanediol - 1:3, 2 - ethyl - 2 - butylpropanediol - 1:3, 2 - ethyl - 2 - methylpropanediol - 1:3, 2:2:4 - trimethylhexanediol - 1:6, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, b ,b 1-thiodiethanol, 1:1-, 1:2-, 1:3- or 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol or 1:2-, 1:3- or 1:4-a ,a 1-xylenediol. The compositions may be used to stabilize fats, fatty oils, hydrocarbons, natural resins, cellulose esters, rubbers, polyesters polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyamides and olefin polymers or copolymers. The latter are preferably (1) polymers of one or more C2- 22 olefins or mixtures thereof with isoprene butadiene, styrene or acrylates, (2) admixtures of polyolefins and polyesters, polyamides or synthetic rubbers. Examples describe the stabilization of polypropylene.
