The method involves predefining a real heat quantity (QI) characterizing change of combustion in a combustion chamber of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. Heat setting quantity (QS) is extracted from a characteristic field (335). A control signal is predefined to determine the combustion change. The field and/or the latter quantity are adapted according to a characteristic obtained from the former quantity. The quantity characterizing change of combustion is predefined based on a signal provided by a pressure sensor of the combustion chamber or noise sensor of an engine structure. An independent claim is also included for a device of managing an internal combustion engine.
