There is provided an image data conversion device capable of preferably converting image data having a wide luminance dynamic range into image data having a narrow dynamic range. The image data conversion device includes: conversion luminance setting means for deciding the luminance histogram of the image data before conversion which is, for example, 0.1% of luminance as the lowest conversion luminance a1, the luminance histogram which is, for example, 50% of luminance as an intermediate conversion luminance a2, and the luminance histogram which is, for example, 99.9% of luminance as the highest conversion luminance a3; conversion characteristic decision means for deciding the conversion characteristic so that the pixel data on the intermediate conversion luminance a2 is positioned at the center of the dynamic range in the image data after conversion according to the relative position A of the intermediate conversion luminance a2; and image data conversion means for converting the data on the lowest conversion luminance a1 to the highest conversion luminance a3 in the image data before conversion to image data having a narrow dynamic range as a target according to the conversion characteristic.
