A dispenser (10) for a cosmetic, cleansing or pharmaceutical composition, comprising a tubular sleeve (14) for housing the whole of a movable sub-assembly (12) in the storage position thereof in such a way that the head of the movable sub-assembly is not accessible. A locking mechanism (16) prevents any outward movement of the movable sub-assembly (12) in the storage position relative to the sleeve. When a user axially depresses the head in the opposite direction to the outward direction, the locking mechanism releases the movable sub-assembly, which is urged outward by a spring (70) at least as far as a position in which the head projects outward from the sleeve.
