An image forming apparatus which makes it possible to reduce wait time before completion of an image stabilization process executed for preparation for image formation, and at the same time ensure image quality. In the image forming apparatus, image formation is performed using developers having respective four colors (yellow (Y), magenta (M), cyan (C), and black (BK)). The image formation apparatus has a BK monochrome mode in which only BK color is used, a full color mode in which are used four colors (yellow (Y), magenta (M), cyan (C), and black (BK)) of four color toners, and an automatic color selection (ACS) mode in which one of the BK monochrome mode and the full color mode is selected by automatically recognizing image data and image formation is carried out in the selected mode. One of the BK monochrome mode, the full color mode, and the ACS mode is set to a default mode upon power-on of the image forming apparatus. A CPU 301 determines the default mode upon power-on of the image forming apparatus. If the set default mode is the BK monochrome mode, an image stabilization process necessary for preparation for image formation is executed only for the BK color, and if the set default mode is the full color mode or the ACS mode, the image stabilization process is executed for all the four colors.
