The release paper substrate, for use with self-adhesive labels, has a lignin wood fiber content of at least 20% of the total fibers. The paper (33), in a roll (34) after passing through a calender, is drawn through an impregnating station (30) to be impregnated with a clear fluid (27) to increase its transparency, using a transfer roller (32) which is partially immersed in a bath. The impregnating fluid contains >=90 wt.% oil together with preferably unsaturated carbonic acids. Surplus fluid is removed from the paper by a cleaning roller (40) with a scraper (41), and a final paper surface scraper (43). The self-adhesive labels are applied to the release paper by a positioning unit monitored by an infra red sensor.
