The method involves applying a free charge into a combustion chamber (12) in an operating area of an internal combustion engine (10) through an intake valve (20). The free charge is isothermally compressed outside the chamber through the intake valve under simultaneous releasing of the heat caused by the compression. The charge is warmed up after its compression by heat exchange, outside the chamber. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine comprising a combustion chamber.
