A method for holding a metal rod (5) for machining has a guide duct (1) with a central bore (4) and with sets of three high pressure oil jets in set vertical planes (10, 12, 14) spaced along the duct. The oil jets are evenly spaced in the vertical planes and are directed radially onto the rod. The rod is held by a slider which moves the end of the rod to the processing station. The guide duct is fitted with acoustic damping inserts (3) which fill the space between the inside walls of the duct and the central bore.
