摘要 <p>A method for strengthening glass by implanting accelerated ions into a glass sample 8. The ions are implanted deeper than minute cracks present on the surface of the glass or to the depth of at least 5fÊm from the surface. Glass is transformed where the ions are implanted, so that the transformed region is formed deeper than the minute cracks or a position located at least 5fÊm deep from the surface. The progress of the cracks on the surface of the glass is suppressed by this transformed area, thus strengthening glass. According to the invention, no beam focusing optical system such as a laser beam device is necessary. Further, a large glass member can be strengthened in a short time because of a larger area into which ions can be implanted at a time. Further, the method is subjected to no restrains in thickness, surface shape or material of glass.</p>
