Computer expansion card (2) is coupled to a host computer (24) and has a power module (4) and a charger (8). The expansion module immediately supplies the host computer with power when the network power supply is not functioning correctly. The power module is recharged from the host network supply when the host is operating normally and its stored power capacity is low. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (A) a computer system with an emergency backup power supply and; (B) a method for provision of emergency backup power.
