A secondary, N-alkylhydroxylated, ortho- and/or meta-substituted para-phenylenediamine of specified formula. The substituted para-phenylenediamine is of formula (I); R : 3-10C alkylene optionally substituted with one or more of amino or monoalkylamino or dialkylamino or alkylcarbonyl or amido or monoalkylaminocarbonyl and optionally interrupted by one or more N or O; R' : alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyalkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, monohydroxyalkyl, polyhydroxyalkyl, Cl; and n : 1-4. Independent claims are included for: (1) A cosmetic composition for the dyeing of keratinic fibers such as the hair comprising, in an appropriate medium, at least one of the claimed compounds; (2) the use of the composition for the dyeing of keratinic fibers, preferably the hair; (3) a ready to use composition comprising a mixture of the claimed composition with one or more oxidant agents: hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide, bromates of alkali metals, persalts, peracids, oxidase enzymes; (4) a method of dyeing human hair by application of the composition for a sufficient time to attain the desired coloration in the presence of an oxidant agent applied before, simultaneously with or after the composition; and (5) the use of the composition in a device with several compartments, a first compartment containing the composition and a second the oxidant agent.
