A disc brake (10) which includes a calliper (16), and a pair of transversely spaced apart pads (18, 20) mounted to the calliper (16). The pads (18, 20) define opposed inwardly directed friction surfaces for contacting opposed sides of a brake disc (12) which passes between the pads (18, 20). The brake (10) includes actuation means (22) for displacing the brake pads between a released position in which the brake disc (12) can pass freely therebetween and an actuated position in which the pads (18,20) are displaced into contact with the disc (12) to brake the disc (12). The brake (10) has a first operative condition in which the actuation means (22) can displace the pads (20) into their actuated position to brake the brake disc (12) and a second operative condition in which braking of the brake disc (12) is inhibited. |
