A nematic liquid crystal composition comprising a 4,6-difluoroindan compound, which exhibits a low liquid crystal phase lower limit temperature (T->N), a high liquid crystal phase upper limit temperature (TN-1) and a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range without detriment to liquid crystal properties such as threshold voltage and response speed within the range of n most appropriate for a nematic liquid crystal display element; and a 4,6- difluoroindan compound for use in the nematic liquid crystal composition. In particular, a nematic liquid crystal composition comprising at least one compound having a 4,6-difluoroindan-2,5-diyl group, which exhibits a refractive index anisotropy of 0.08 to 0.15, a liquid crystal phase upper limit temperature of 70°C or higher, a liquid crystal phase lower limit temperature of -20°C or below and a difference between liquid crystal phase upper limit temperature and liquid crystal phase lower limit temperature of 90°C or over. |
