The inventive thread measuring device (1) is a manual measuring device comprising a thread capturing device (8) which places the thread on top of a thread laying-on element (27) of a force sensor (29) when a release lever (6) is actuated. The detected thread tension and the detected thread speed of a processing device is transmitted for display and further processing. The device can be used with one hand. The boomerang-shaped housing (2) is embodied as a handle on one end with a release lever and a control knob (10), which is embodied in the form of a rotating/press switch, disposed thereon along with a display (5). The control knob (10) can be rotated with the thumb of the user and can be pressed such that it can be fully used, i.e. in order to select all operating and measuring modes, with the aid of the thumb alone. Measurement occurs via the release lever (6) which actuates the thread capturing element (8) and a measuring activation switch (49).
