A method for preparing a lithium cobalt composite oxide represented by the general formula: LipCoxMyOzF a wherein M represents a transition metal element except cobalt or an alkaline earth metal element, 0.9 <= p <= 1.1, 0.980 <= x <= 1.000, 0 <= y <= 0.02, 1.9 <= z <= 2.1, x + y = 1, and 0 <= a <= 0.02, characterized in that a mixture containing a cobalt hydroxide material comprising roughly spherical secondary particles formed by the agglomeration of primary particles and having an average particle size of 8 to 20 mum and a tricobalt tetraoxide material comprising secondary particles formed by the agglomeration of primary particles and having an average particle diameter of 2 to 10 mum in a cobalt atomic ratio of 5 : 1 to 1 : 5 is used as a cobalt source, and firing is carried out at a temperature of 700 to 1050°C. The method can be employed for preparing a lithium cobalt composite oxide for use in a positive electrode of a lithium secondary cell, which exhibits a great volume capacity density, high safety, high durability for charge-discharge cycle, a high press density and high productivity. |
