PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an easily synthesizable new acid anhydride, a polymer obtained by using the same, a varnish containing the polymer, an orienting film obtained from the varnish, having characteristics such as having a suitable pre-tilt angle, giving an appropriate electric voltage-maintaining rate to an element and hardly causing a scorch, and a liquid crystal-displaying element having the orienting film. SOLUTION: The acid anhydride is expressed by formula (1) [wherein, A<SB>1</SB>is a divalent organic group; and B<SB>1</SB>, B<SB>2</SB>are each independently a group expressed by formula (a) or (b) (wherein, R<SB>11</SB>, R<SB>12</SB>are each independently H, an alkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or a fluoroalkyl; and R<SB>31</SB>, R<SB>32</SB>are each independently H or a monovalent organic group)].
