Foot and mouth disease virus vaccine comprising an interferon (alpha or beta) vector

An early-acting effective antiviral composition comprises a construct which expresses interferon-alpha or interferon-beta of cloven-hooved animal origin and further consists of a DNA sequence which encodes all viral structural proteins and the 3C proteinase of a foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) wherein the proteins stimulate an immune response. When administered to an animal the interferon is expressed prior to the immunogenic effect of the additional components. Also described are compositions comprising an adenovirus vector that expresses interferon-alpha or interferon-beta of cloven-hooved animal origin and a FMDV vaccine, wherein the interferon will be expressed prior to the immunogenic effect of the FMDV vaccine. The compositions can be used for inhibiting or delaying the onset or severity of foot and mouth disease
