Telomere restoration and extension of cell life-span in animals cloned from senescent somatic cells

Disclosed are methods for rejuvenating a primary cell. The methods comprises transferring a primary cell, its nucleus or chromosomes to a recipient oocytes or egg in order to generate an embryo, then obtaining an inner cell mass, embryonic disc and/or stem cell using said embryo and injecting into a non-human immuno-compromised animal to form a teratoma. The resultant teratoma is isolated and the different germ layers are separated for identifying specific cells types and then isolating a cell of the same type as the primary cell. Also disclosed are methods of performing compound genetic manipulations, making genetically altered non-human animals, of recloning cloned animals, resetting the life-span of senescent, checkpoint arrested or near-senescent cells, and of identifying genes and that enhances telomerase activity and compounds that inhibit telomerase or EPC-1 activity.
