PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is driven at high speed, further scarcely produces black out and uses a bistable cholesteric liquid crystal. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element comprises a chiral nematic liquid crystal layer held between substrates wherein the liquid crystal changes into a planar alignment or into a focal conic alignment corresponding to a voltage applied with electrodes. In the planar alignment, light reflected on the electrode is absorbed with a circularly polarizing element so as to bring about a black display. In the focal conic alignment, light reflected on the electrode is transmitted by the circularly polarizing element so as to bring about a white display. The liquid crystal is driven by outputting a voltage pulse group including a resetting period Trs to reset the liquid crystal into a homeotropic state, a selecting period Ts to select an alignment of the liquid crystal in the state with no applied voltage and a retaining period Trt to establish the alignment of the liquid crystal selected in the selecting period.
