Radar unit, especially a handheld short-range unit for detecting objects contained with a medium has at least a broadband impulse radar sensor (60) that generates a high frequency detection signal. A reflected signal is then analyzed to draw conclusions about any detected objects. At least an additional sensor (64) is provided for producing at least a further detection signal to obtain information about any enclosed objects. An independent claim is made for a radar-based method for detecting an object enclosed in a medium.
