<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device having improved light-emitting characteristics, and to provide a liquid display device provided with the same. <P>SOLUTION: The surface light source device has a surface light source for emitting light, and a drive circuit for controlling the drive of the light source, according to the peripheral temperatures detected at the periphery of the light source. The drive circuit has a drive voltage control part that outputs a light source control signal, by comparing the detected peripheral temperature with a standard temperature that does not cause drifts to be generated, and a drive voltage generating part that generates a flat light source driving voltage by a surface light source control signal. The drive voltage control part outputs a high-level light source control signal, when the peripheral temperature is higher than the reference temperature, and outputs a low-level surface light source control signal, when the peripheral temperature is lower than the reference temperature.
